Synopsis

Country singer turned rancher Brett Taylor fought his way out of the bottle so he could have JT Campbell in his life. JT's patience, intelligence, and humor broke through Brett's walls of depression, and now the once-isolated rancher and his young California guy in search of himself are together on Brett's Texas ranch.

While Brett and JT are more in love than ever, they’re still dealing with past baggage and learning how to move forward. Brett’s former lover casts a long shadow over their lives—one JT tries to pretend doesn’t bother him. Can Brett soothe his fears with the sort of sappy, sentimental Valentine’s Day JT was taught to shun growing up—but secretly always wanted?

When Halloween rolls around, a costumed night out at the local bar might lead to another romantic first. And on Christmas morning, JT awakes to some sweet loving and the most meaningful gift he could ever imagine. The New Year truly brings a new beginning—ushered in by some silly, sparkly, and sexy fun.

One year. Four important holidays. Two men who have worked hard for the love and trust they share and the bright future that’s finally within their grasp.

Review

First of all, I love direct sequels.  I know I’ve said it before, but it’s the absolute truth.  When it’s well done, a sequel can peer into the lives of an established couple and let you see how they are faring after the Happily Ever After.  Life has a tendency to throw a monkey wrench into things, and it’s nice to see how he couple works together to overcome those obstacles to stay together.

A little over a year ago, I read a book called “Unbreak My Heart.”  I can honestly say I don’t remember what drew me to the book, only what kept me coming back, and that was the character of Brett.  Haunted by the decisions of his past, he spent his days working on his ranch and his nights losing himself in the bottle.  That is, until his lovingly overbearing mother, Millie, picks up JT on the side of the road, and insists he work on the ranch.  Watching Brett fight his inner demons and claw his way from the depths of despair was truly remarkable.

Now, you might be asking why I’m talking so much about that book when this is a review for another.  The answer is simple:  Unbroken Hearts is a continuation of the love story of Brett and JT.

There’s a seamless transition.  If you read the first book, it’s like meeting old friends.  Millie still meddles, but with the best of intentions.  Ray is still crotchety.  JT is has found his footing, going from California surfer boy to glorified ranch hand.  And Brett…Brett has lost his anger and guilt.  The banter between Brett and Ray is perfect.  The sense of family, even though half of the characters aren’t related by blood is perfect.  In one scene, Millie signs a card to her “sons”, and it just melts your heart.  Everything Brett does, and I mean EVERYTHING, is for JT.

While it’s possible to read this on its own, I really wouldn’t recommend it for only one reason.  You would be doing a total disservice to yourself and to the characters.  It’s well worth reading the first one to completely enjoy this.  It’s a warm, cozy continuation to one of my favorite couples, and I enjoyed every word!
